In recent news, Vanuatu has become one of the first Pacific countries to allow businesses to grow medicinal herbal medicine a.k.a, marijuana, after signing into law policies governing the import, cultivation, and manufacture of the plant. That’s right folks, the country is getting herbally high, and we are feeling left out.
Meanwhile, Fiji is still debating on the idea of industrial hemp, not realizing that our Pacific island neighbors are already cashing in on the herbal medicine craze. We can’t help but feel like the kid who missed out on the party, or in this case, the herb garden.
As the saying goes, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” So, what can Fiji do to catch up and join the green medicine market? How can we turn our wasteful marijuana raids into multi-million dollar herbal medicine exports?
For years, the Fiji Police Force have bragged about their multimillion-dollar marijuana farm raids in Kadavu and Navosa, not anticipating that one day, it would be commercialized by our Pacific island neighbors. The new grand coalition government came in advocating for change so maybe It’s time for a change of perspective, and maybe even a change of career for some of our officers. Instead of going after marijuana, they should be studying up on the benefits of medicinal marijuana and it's benefits. We bet some of them already know. But that's not what this article is about.
Can you magine a world where we don’t have to raid farms and destroy crops, but instead, we can legally grow and export medicinal herbal medicine? It’s high time we stop wasting our resources and start using them to benefit our economy and our health.
We could have a whole new industry on our hands, with products ranging from herbal teas to pain-relieving balms and don't even get us started on herbal tourism, that's a golden goose right there. And who knows, maybe we could even export our famous Fiji Water infused with herbal extracts. Talk about starting the day on a high!
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. We must first convince our government officials that apart from industrial hemp, medicinal marijuana is also the way to go. It’s time for them to herb up and see the potential in this market.
Some may argue that medicinal marijuana is still controversial and carries a social stigma, but we say let’s break down those barriers and light up a new trail. We could even have a new tourism campaign promoting Fiji as the land of herbal medication, with slogans like “Fiji, where the grass is always greener!”
Of course, we must also ensure that we follow proper regulations and guidelines to ensure the safety and effectiveness of our medicinal plants. We don’t want anyone getting herbally hurt or experiencing any unwanted side effects.
But if we do this right, we could be looking at a whole new source of income for our country. We could even become the go-to destination for green medicine enthusiasts around the world.
So, Fiji, it’s time to stop sitting on the sidelines and get in on the green medicinal craze. Let’s turn our wasteful raids into a fruitful industry and show the world what we’re made of. Let’s herb up and make Fiji proud.
